Redefining the ‘woo girl’ with Nausheen

In an exciting next stage of her career, we sat down with Eora based DJ Nausheen to discuss creating outside of heteronormative spaces, and redefining what it means to be a ‘woo girl.’

Nausheen is undeniably a familiar face on Eora dance floors — her warm enigmatic energy widely known to Eora punters, both in front and behind the decks. Reconnecting with old friends and vibrant queer spaces, Nausheen is an exciting new phase of her DJ career, experimenting with flirtatious, feminine sound, and redefining what it means to be a ‘woo girl,’ beyond the perimeters of heteronormative spaces.

Ahead of her second performance at Club 77, we sat down with Nausheen to discuss her ever-evolving place in the community and expressing her femininity through sound.

Can you tell us a bit more about your personal style of DJing and how this might’ve changed over the years?

My personal style of DJing has evolved a lot over the past few years. When I first started going to events, I gravitated towards underground electronic music - but after exploring more of Sydney with older friends, I experienced a significantly different dance floor culture from heteronormative electronic parties. I observed how sound impacts different environments and summons energy on a dance floor. I found that queer parties often used more percussion and MCing more conducive to dancing.

This was quite impressionate on my sound - and I began to veer away from the gentle melodies, incorporating exciting beats and vocal elements through my mixes. Now, I believe my sound is a melting pot of my experience of partying through Eora over the years, with elements of electronic layered with RnB, percussive South Asian and Arabic sounds, and hard hitting club.

What does being a woo girl really mean and what spirit do these tracks embody for you?

A woo girl is someone who unashamedly leaves a lasting imprint on the dance floor. They are often loud and easily identifiable, just by the presence they exude. A woo girl embodies femininity, being cheeky and sexy, and free in their body, spreading warmth internally from the music, and out towards the dance floor.

What can we expect from your Club 77 set on the 17th?

Since it’s a Thursday night, I’ll be warming up gently, before heading into more trance and heavy bass, layered with elements of RnB and faster percussion.
