Amplifying Heritage and Inclusivity: Neesha Alexander is a shining light in Meanjin's Underground Scene
In the gritty heart of Meanjin's underground music scene, Neesha Alexander is reshaping the cultural landscape with her innovative fusion of genres and deep-rooted heritage. As a Fem Queen daughter of Magandjin’s esteemed House of Alexander and recipient of the Queens Ball 2023 'DJ of the Year,' Neesha intricately weaves her fa'afafine traditions into contemporary electronic music.
Her performances defy conventional DJ sets, artfully blending techno, jersey club, ballroom, and hard drum to create a soundscape that is both modern and profoundly personal. Sharing stages with international such as Jyoty, Partiboi69, Cakes Da Killa, Suchi, and UNIIQU3, she has solidified her influence on both local and national levels.
Recently, Neesha joined a stacked lineup at Meanjin's inaugural Boiler Room event, playing a set that was both a homage to her Samoan roots and a reflection of the city's diverse diasporas. Beyond the stage, Neesha is a fierce advocate for the QTBIPOC community, First Nations people, and trans people of color. She actively promotes inclusive club nights with a focus on supporting marginalised groups, contributing to a more equitable and diverse music scene.
By integrating her cultural heritage with a progressive musical vision, Neesha Alexander is not just redefining the sound of Meanjin's underground scene but also shaping its social fabric. Her work stands as a testament to the transformative potential of music when rooted in authenticity and driven by a commitment to inclusivity.
