Currently based in Paris and originally from Boorloo / Perth, yet firmly established in Eora from their time settled here.
In the past year Gillielove has made appearances on Rinse France and Radio Sofa in Paris as well as Freedom Time Festival this summer. They have previously supported artists like Lorraine James, DjRum, Batu, DJ Plead, ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U, Tom Boogizm, Cassius Select, Underground Resistance, DJ Bone, Konduku, TSVI and MC Yallah.
Recently they’ve been diving into production with recent releases including ‘procession in Dante’s square’ released on Beatrice M’s label Bait.
A wonky, percussive piece with samples, glitches, distortion all chopped together in an off-kilter yet still rhythmic way. Her catalogue also includes a collaboration with Eora artist Command D. “L’s” is a dubby atmospheric track with growls in all the right places.
Last year you relocated to Paris what has the impact been on you musically?
I think I've felt more confidence in music production since relocating. It's been formative growing my musical journey in Sydney but it was hard for me to carve out the time for production. Collaborative tracks that I made in Sydney (with Command D and Slow 83) were the groundwork for me to explore Ableton with friends. Being in a new city offers time that has allowed me to focus on production as a means of expression. My first weekend attending Dans an Diaoul - Theo Muller's micro festival had inspiring experiences due to its unique lineup and sound culture from Krakzh label.
You’ve recently taken the plunge into music production what have been your biggest learnings so far?
I think my biggest learnings would just be to play and experiment. Listening to Lee Gamble discuss his trial-and-error approach inspired me greatly; playing around with samples and effects helps build groove within my soundscape which is heavily bass-oriented.
From someone who’s been active in the local underground scene for a few years now what is special or unique about this community?
The community here is incredibly open-minded; people love various sounds and trust promoters deeply which extends safety and encouragement within our spaces especially welcoming new attendees curious about these scenes.
Any goals or aspirations to kick off the year?
I'm working on wrapping up my first remix for New York based artist No Sir's EP along with other projects involving French experimental electronic labels which may include securing a radio residency here!
