How an Aussie drummer created Touching Bass’ most adventurous album

Is the debut release from Touching Bass still its finest hour?

Errol and Alex Rita of Touching Bass

the South London-based musical movement, club series and record label - have enjoyed an affinity with Australia ever since the duo touched down for their first Oz tour in 2018.

Melbourne in particular still holds a special place in their musical hearts.

“When we go there it just feels like home,” Rita told Bandcamp Daily of the duo's visits to Naarm.

Such is their love for Melbs that Errol and Alex entrusted Grammy-nominated hip-hop producer and Hiatus Kaiyote drummer, Clever Austin (aka Perrin Moss), with their label's debut album release back in 2019.

Five years on, ‘Pareidolia’ remains the crowning jewel in the Touching Bass catalogue; a balmy assortment of shape-shifting, jazzy, soul-inflected hip-hop that still sounds as fresh as the day it first dropped.

But forward facing instrumental hip-hop is just a small taste of the exceptionally broad aural flavours Touching Bass proffers.

Be sure to check out the label’s full catalogue over at Bandcamp.

Touching Bass & Sassy J play Club 77 on Saturday 4 January alongside Marcel Vogel and Mazzacles. 10pm - 5am with free entry on guest list before 12am. Click here for more info and to register.
