Emerging artist only child weighs in on the future of club culture ahead of her debut performance at Club 77 - and it looks bright.
From working behind the bar to controlling the booth, only child approaches her debut Club 77 gig with a refined understanding on what makes a great club night - from her sharp, hypnotic selections, to her insights into the ways that venues can support community and enrich the spaces that they occupy.
Ahead of the show, we sat down with only child to pick her brain on all things club culture and peek into her library of delicious liquid Trance tracks and House vocals.
Is it true you started off behind the bar at Club 77? In your experience what makes a really great club night?
I did! When I first moved to Sydney a couple years ago and started going out my friends and I would bounce around a few different clubs but I always found myself coming back to 77 every weekend - the culture that has been created there is truly unmatched. Once I started working at 77 I really began to understand what makes a great club.
Aside from the music, it’s really just the people that make it. It starts with the club staff and the security that promote a safe space and also the regulars are so important in keeping the nights going, that’s something really special that can’t be forced. A great club night isn’t necessarily determined by that singular night, it relies on the atmosphere and culture that has been created in that space over time. It’s that foundation that leads it to be a great night there, regardless of whether the venue’s at capacity or there’s 8 people on the dancefloor.
As a next-gen artist what do you think the future of club culture looks / sounds like?
Having moved to Sydney somewhat recently, I feel like I’m still finding my place in the scene but it’s exciting to see how club culture is evolving - especially with all the changes coming from the government's new ‘vibrancy reforms.’ Recently, I feel like there’s been a bigger focus on community driven events and spaces, so I think club culture is moving toward something more raw and real. People just want good music, good energy, and a space where they can express themselves.

(one of those tracks that I’ll forget about for awhile and then when it pops up I fall in love with it all over again)
(never fails to bring out smiles from the dancefloor)
(I played this at one of my very first club gigs - will always have such a special place in my heart)
