Threads of Sound: Mowgli Debuts at Club 77

Shifting through bass, breaks and fast club rhythms, Boorloo-raised and South Asian-rooted Mowgli arrives at Club 77 for his debut set — teaming up with 77 Resident and fellow KERFEW member Deepa for a night driven by instinct, energy and momentum.

In the early days, Mowgli played within tight genre lines — until slowly, those lines began to blur. Today, his sets stretch across UKG, baile funk, DnB and beyond, forming a sound that’s confident, considered, and uniquely his own.

His work behind the scenes — co-founding KERFEW, a collective of South Asian artists and creatives, and throwing parties with HIVE — has shaped the way he reads a dancefloor. It’s not just about energy, but pacing. Holding tension. Knowing when to let a track speak. Through KERFEW, Mowgli has helped build a space where South Asian artists across so-called Australia can connect, express, and share culture on their own terms — plural, layered, and evolving.

In the lead-up to his 77 debut, we spoke with Mowgli about navigating sound without boundaries, curating beyond identity labels, and the quiet thrill of dropping something unreleased into a room that’s ready for it.

Yourself and Deepa have a long history as artists and organisers — how does it feel to be playing alongside one another tonight?

That's the homie! I've seen her play at KERFEW gigs and her sets have always gone off - she's got such great energy - so it's an absolute honour! No one else I'd rather do my 77 debut with.

You're maintained a wonderful balance — paying homage to your South Asian heritage while still staying true to your evolving personal sound. How do you strike this balance? Has it evolved with time?

Thank you! It has definitely evolved with time. When I started DJing I was playing strictly genre focused sets, which meant I never would mix different genres together. Over time those boundaries became more blurred as I started finding my personal voice through DJing. Bringing my heritage to the mix was just another piece of the puzzle that really helps tie it all together. It took time and a lot of trial and error, but I can't ever see myself playing sets which don't feel authentic anymore!*

Your edits and mixes always come with a healthy dose of UKG and breaks. Any track ID’s we should look out for?

I've got some unreleased stuff I've been working on with my homie SANJAY (@sanjaybeats) that I've been itching to play out, but also I've been digging for the past month while on holiday, and I'm currently loving the new releases from More Time Records as well as tunes by Foura, Omar+, SHAKING and Bullet Tooth to name a few.*

How has being an organiser influenced your DJing? Any key lessons or approach you now bring to the booth?

I think the main difference is that producing events helps you understand the overall punter experience a lot better and that influences how you see DJing as a part of an "ecosystem". It's taught me understanding flow during sets and the importance of holding audiences vs just rinsing bangers for 4 hours straight! You gotta let tracks breathe. I haven't done an extended set in a while now, so I'm actually really keen to test my ability at Club 77.

Catch Mowgli alongside Deepa at Club 77 this Friday 02 May from 10pm til 5am.
