Correct artist programming is paramount for a successful party. This may sound obvious, but how many times have you walked into a club only to be blasted by a warm up DJ banging it out at 10pm, leaving the headliner with nowhere to go?
The warm up set is the most important of the night. It conjures the vibe, sets the tone, and points the dance floor on the right path.
In an effort to restore the quintessential clubbing experience, Club 77 presents Project 77; a collection of forward-thinking club nights where we hand the programming duties over to the artists. Across a series of definitive parties, the headline DJ will personally select their own warm up act; a knowledgeable DJ to build them a proper platform in which to execute an extended set of dance floor hedonism.
Kicking off our first Project 77 party are two of Sydney’s brightest talents, Ayebatonye and Deepa, members of an exciting new wave of electronic talent currently sweeping our fine city. Both possessing a penchant for eclecticism, expect an array of expressive rhythms and diverse selections underpinned by entrancing grooves.
It’s time for a reset. For new beginnings, fresh ideas and forward-thinking experiences. It’s time to recalibrate with Project 77.
Ayebatonye
Music and community are the threads that connect all the facets of Ayebatonye’s work, from her DJing through to her community arts projects.
Never one to stick to a singular genre, Ayebatonye’s entrancing sets blend together an array of global electronic sounds, from afro rhythms to classic house and techno. Her wide ranging sets have led to her supporting iconic artists including The Illustrious Blacks, Marcellus Pittman and Claire Morgan, and her first Boiler Room appearance earlier this year.
As well as being the Sydney editor for Resident Advisor, she also runs the DIY arts platform ‘Irregular Fit’, which provides communities of colour beginner free DJ workshops, hosted events, and facilitated research and community engagement projects.
Deepa
DJ, host of FBi Radio’s Saturday Sunset, and one half of jazz-loving party duo, Honey Point, Deepa is guided by all things warm with a deep affinity for intention.
With refined tastes stretching from rose-tinted Indopop and cheeky breaks to deep, dark hypnotic drums, Deepa has been entrusted to play alongside the likes of Tim Sweeney, Carista, Ahadadream, and Toma Kami to name a few.
Equally capable of capturing crowds in the early hours of the night or wee hours of the morning, Deepa’s modus operandi is to coyly weave sets that toe the line between sweet and dangerous.
Club 77 is an ally to the queer/trans community and a safe space for freedom and expression. We have zero tolerance for transphobia, homophobia and racism. If you cannot respect those around you please do not attend.
